Trying out my new DSLR EOS Rebel T7 18-55mm camera

Figured I'd try it on some of our recent road trips:

A while back I bought a new camera.

Nothing real fancy of course — A mid range DSLR EOS Rebel T7 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 is II.

Figured I’d try it on some of our recent road trips to see how it all worked out. Still not real good at all of this picture taking stuff but I’m sure that I’ll eventually get the hang of it.

I’ve got a list of lenses I want to buy for it, but in the meantime, here are some photos I took with the lens it came with.

The Canon EOS Rebel T7 (also known as the EOS 2000D in some regions) is an entry-level DSLR camera from Canon, often sold in a kit with the EF-S 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 IS II lens. Released in 2018, it’s designed for beginners transitioning from smartphone photography to a dedicated camera system. It features a 24.1-megapixel APS-C CMOS sensor and Canon’s EF/EF-S lens mount, making it compatible with a wide range of lenses. While it’s somewhat dated by 2023 standards, it remains a budget-friendly option for learning photography basics like manual controls and composition.

If you’re a complete beginner on a budget (under $500) and want to learn DSLR basics without overwhelming features, the Rebel T7 with 18-55mm lens is still a solid choice — especially for still photography in good light. It produces better results than most smartphones and helps build skills. However, if you need better video, faster autofocus, or a more modern design (like a touchscreen or mirrorless body), consider alternatives like the Canon EOS R50 (~$600–$700) or even used Rebels like the T8i. For action or low-light work, look elsewhere. If you can find this kit used or on sale, it’s an even better deal.
